Last week, the Revel Analytics Community hosted its first Hackathon event in a new ongoing series.

For  the first event, we wanted to explore the basics of IoT and Raspberry Pi devices. We loaded Raspbian OS onto the Raspberry Pi devices, wired up the temperature sensors to the IoT devices using breadboards, and got streaming data running.

Next up: Streaming that data to the AWS cloud, and building heatmap data visualizations of the data atop the AutoCAD plans of Revel HQ using Microsoft Power BI!

In Hackathons to follow, we’ll scale the solution to 20 IoT devices for more meaningful heatmaps, integrate key Raspberry Pi devices into the thermostats for automated control, and develop an optimization routine to minimize temperature in the office while minimizing costs.

At Revel, we make time to enjoy technology, create spaces where we can explore new ideas, and reconnect with colleagues and friends. Our intent with the Hackathons is to make these values come to life.

Going forward, our Hackathons are open to the public! We will provide the food, refreshments, technology, and music. Keep an eye out for our event postings on our website and LinkedIn; all you need to bring is your creativity and laptop.
